Build your career portfolio
A career portfolio can include a CV, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, references and recommendations, work experience record, certificates and diplomas, examples of your own work and more. In short, anything that demonstrates your competence and experience.
A CV is essential
No career portfolio should lack a good CV. Even though LinkedIn profiles have recently become more prominent, the CV is still the most common type of self-presentation required by companies.
Each CV should meet the following characteristics:
- Relevance
Using the job description, list things that might interest the person who will decide if you are the right candidate. - Be specific
Avoid general wording - the goal is that everyone can get an idea of who you are and what you can do after reading it. - Be concise
There is an art to expressing all the essentials in a small space; those who master it will not get lost in today's world. - Clarity
Technical terms, abbreviations or specific vocabulary can cause misunderstandings. Have someone you know read your CV and ask for feedback. - Formality
The appearance of the CV says a lot about the writer; let your personality shine through. - Grammatical correctness
Nothing can spoil the impression of a perfectly polished CV, like typos and spelling mistakes; this is where double-checking pays off.
TIP!
The career portfolio may include other documents and materials. Create a folder to keep everything in.
