1. Get to know yourself

Self-awareness is one of the core competencies for the 21st century.

The first step to choosing my ideal career is figuring out who I am. It's logical - the moment you want to do a job you'll be happy in, it needs to match your setting. And such a setting is made up of a large number of components.

How to get started with self-awareness

Try to focus on the following areas and answer each question:

  • My values
What is important to me in life? What if I lose it, will I miss it?
  • My attitudes
What is my basic worldview? What does work mean to me?
  • My hobbies
What do I do in my spare time? What would I like to do for free?
  • My competences
What are my strengths? What are my strengths? What am I as good at as others?
  • My behaviour
What are my reactions when I am calm? What are my reactions when I am stressed?
  • My motivation
What influences my performance? What increases and decreases my performance?

More tips and advice

  • Try new things
This is the most effective way to see how we react in different situations.
  • Ask for feedback
Whenever possible, ask others how they rate your work or approach.
  • Discuss with people with opposing views.
We tend to surround ourselves with people with similar views, which is nice, but in many ways, can be impoverishing.
  • Think about your own motives
You don't necessarily have to analyse every step in your life, but from time to time, it doesn't hurt to reflect on the situations we find ourselves in and how we deal with them.
  • Educate yourself
Expanding your horizons helps you look at things objectively, including insight into your behaviour.
  • Experience something extraordinary
There are specialised courses and training that aim to help a person know themselves in different situations.
  • Talk to an expert
Whether you use the services of a coach, psychologist or counsellor, you can broaden your view of yourself with pertinent questions or insights.
